The PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme has significantly accelerated the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across the country by providing targeted demand incentives for multiple EV categories, including e-two wheelers (e-2W), e-three wheelers (e-rickshaws, e-carts and L5 category), e-ambulances and e-trucks.
The scheme aims to reduce the upfront cost of electric mobility by offering incentives directly to consumers (buyers/end users), which are reimbursed by the Government of India to the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). This approach has helped make electric vehicles more affordable and accessible nationwide.
The PM E-DRIVE Scheme supports over 28 lakh electric vehicles. As of 27 January 2026, a total of 22.12 lakh EVs have been sold under the scheme, including 19.19 lakh e-two wheelers and 2.93 lakh e-three wheelers.
In addition, an allocation of ₹4,391 crore has been made under the scheme for the deployment of 14,028 electric buses. Of these, 13,800 e-buses have been allocated in two phases to seven cities with a population exceeding 40 lakh, namely Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune and Surat.
Tenders for 10,900 e-buses allocated in the first phase have already been finalized by CESL, while tenders for the remaining 2,900 e-buses under the second phase were issued on 9 January 2026.
The scheme also provides support for the establishment of EV public charging infrastructure and the upgradation of testing facilities. An allocation of ₹2,000 crore has been made for setting up electric vehicle public charging stations across India.
These initiatives have strengthened the EV ecosystem, enhanced consumer confidence, and facilitated large-scale adoption of clean and sustainable mobility solutions.
As of 31 December 2025, a total amount of ₹1,703 crore has been reimbursed to OEMs as demand incentives provided to buyers of e-two wheelers and e-three wheelers under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme.
